Carmela Digiorgio

December 27, 1928 — April 8, 2025

Carmela (Morra) DiGiorgio was born on December 27, 1928, in Amsterdam, New York, to Antonio and Erminigilda Morra. She attended Amsterdam High School and then enrolled in a vocational business college. Upon graduation, she found employment in an administrative role in an importing company in Amsterdam. She had studied piano for ten years, but family responsibilities prevented her from pursuing that dream in college. She married Ralph DiGiorgio from Schenectady on June 17, 1951, not long after he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. She and Ralph were married 71 years until his passing on October 25, 2022. Shortly after the births of their first two children, they moved to Schenectady, where they resided until recently. Immaculate Conception Parish and School were the center of their lives for many years, where she later became a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Food Pantry. Following the closing of Immaculate Conception Church, she joined Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Rotterdam, where he was also active as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of RCIA, and the Bereavement Committee. She later joined St. Edward the Confessor Parish in Clifton Park, New York, where she continued her charitable endeavors and quickly became a beloved member with Ralph of this parish community.

She volunteered for thirteen years at the gift shop at the former St. Clare's Hospital and then volunteered for Catholic Charities at the Scotia/Glenville Senior Center, where she assisted at the meal site. There were many years of selfless sacrifice raising five children and working part-time to help support the family, all with love and without complaint. Sunday dinners were the norm, as were the various holiday traditions that created warm and lasting memories for her family. Carmela, in her later years, found the opportunity with Ralph to travel to many places, such as Italy, Jerusalem, Portugal, Italy, France, Spain. As a woman of great faith, she also went on pilgrimages to the various shrines in Canada. She also went on some cruises that took her to many countries. Every voyage was richly- deserved.

Carmela is survived by her five children, Joseph (Donna), Michael (Kate), Susan, Jean, Janet DiGiorgio-Miller (Robert); and grandchildren Alexandra DiGiorgio Casertano (Nicholas), Mary DiGiorgio Snider (Matthew), Joseph DiGiorgio, Christopher Cunningham, Melissa Cunningham, Morgan Cunningham, Emily Poll, and great-granddaughter, Chiara Elise Casertano (Alexandra and Nicholas); and sister-in-law Dolores Fazio, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and brother Peter Morra.
