William G. Johnson, 71, of Scotia passed away at home on Friday August 3, 2018. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Peter and Beverley (Harlow) Johnson. He received an associate's degree from Nassau Community College and graduated from SUNY at Oswego with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts. William also earned 30 credit hours in Special Education towards his master's from the College of St. Rose. He proudly volunteered to serve his country in the Army from 1965-1971. William completed a tour in Vietnam as a radio operator, performing reconnaissance. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Service Medal and earned an Expert Badge on the M-16. He later served in the Army Reserves for 20 years. After retirement, William was active with the 101st Airborne Division retirees. Following 30 years of government service with the US Post Office, he retired in 2004. As a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. William was also active as a Cub Scout leader of Scotia Pack #2. He enjoyed playing bridge, woodworking, carving and reading. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. William was well loved and had a unique sense of humor. He always showed kindness and consideration of others. Simply put, he was a fun-loving person! William is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Johnson whom he married May 30, 1970, his daughter Darlene Long (Ralph) of Syracuse, two sons William Johnson (Ginger) of Lee, NH and David Johnson of Columbia, MD, two brothers Peter Johnson (Audrey) of Ashland, MA and Walter Johnson (Mary) of Big Ben, IL. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Samuel, Will, Alyssa and Redd as well as several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of William's life will be held Friday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church 9 Trinity Place Amsterdam at 12:45PM followed by light refreshments.. Calling Hours will be Thursday evening at the Bond Funeral Home 1614 Guilderland Avenue Schenectady, NY from 4:30PM-8PM. Interment with military honors will be private at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in William's memory to the Disabled American Veterans 36 E.7th Street Ste 220 Cincinnati, OH 45202-4439.
