William F Cowie

William (Bill) F. Cowie, Jr , age 96, of Cross Hill Road, Monroe, Connecticut died on April 19, 2017 at Masonicare in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Mr. Cowie was born in Blooming Grove, Pennsylvania on October 4th, 1920 and was the son of the late William Nevin and Elizabeth Loretta (Hazen) Cowie. Bill moved with his family to Chester, New Jersey in 1932. He attended Chester Township Public Schools and Roxbury High School graduating in 1939. His family owned the Cowie's Game Farm and Hunting Preserve. After High School, Bill was employed by Hercules Powder Company in Kenvil, NJ as a powder cutting machine operator. In January 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served as a medical technician. He received the Good Conduct Medal in 1944 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1946. While serving his country, William was married at St. Joseph's Church in Mendham, NJ on August 26, 1944 to Beatrice (Bea) Marie Waters the daughter of Harold and Olive (Searles) Waters of Chester, NJ. After his military service, he returned to work at Hercules retiring after 38 years of service in 1976. He lived most of his life on the family farm in Chester. Bill was an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 9 and served in the Chester Auxiliary Police. During his life, Bill and Bea enjoyed gardening, camping and playing cards with family and friends. In 1998 Bill and Bea moved to Rotterdam, New York to be near their family. In 2008 Bill moved to Monroe, Connecticut to live with his daughter Peggy and her husband Tom Morgan. Bill was a former communicant of St. Lawrence's Catholic Church in Chester, NJ. and Our Lady of the Assumption in Rotterdam. He was predeceased by his wife Beatrice in 2002 and one son, Thomas Cowie in 1997. He was also predeceased by his brother Robert James Cowie and his sisters Catherine Mary Higgins, Elizabeth Betty Manning, and Regina Marie Forsythe. "Pop", as he was known, is survived by his loving family, two daughters Peggy A. Morgan and husband Thomas of Monroe, CT; Deborah J. Schmitt and husband Richard of Rotterdam; two sons John W. Cowie and wife Mary Lynn of Charlotte, NC; Peter R. Cowie and wife Toni of Rotterdam and daughter-in-law Cathy Cowie of Flanders, NJ. He is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday Morning, April 25th at 8:45 a.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, NY followed at 9:30 a.m.at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 210 Princetown Road, Rotterdam where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call Monday evening April 24th at the Bond Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Internment is at St. Cyril's Cemetery, Rotterdam. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill's name, can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Albany, NY 12205 or the charity of one's choice.
