William A Bonk

January 21, 1932 — February 17, 2023

William (Bill) A. Bonk, 91, of Rotterdam, passed away peacefully on Friday February 17, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bill was born on January 21,1932 to Edward and Emeline (Cramer) Bonk. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Robert.

Bill was a graduate of Siena College where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He later served his country proudly in the Army from 1954-1956, followed by several years in the reserves, retiring as Captain.

He was employed as the Director of Human Resources Management for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, retiring in 1991.

Bill was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church in Schenectady serving as a lector at Mass. He later became a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Rotterdam.

Bill was an active member in community organizations including the Rotterdam Elks, Knights of St. John, the Rotterdam Seniors, and the Rotterdam Boys Club. He enjoyed traveling Europe with his wife Alice, including multiple trips to Italy. Bill will always be remembered for his love of family gatherings, hearty laughter and contagious smile.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Alice (Raviele) Bonk of 68 years, his children Cindy (Rick) Lackey, Edward (Karen) Bonk, and Lisa (Gene) Vitullo. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Joe) Pallante, seven grandchildren Ross Lackey (Nicole Downes), Alicia (Melissa) Lackey, Jason (Virginia) Vitullo, Julie (Pieter) Burhans, Katelyn (Andrew) Hines, Lindsay (Ian) Osterlitz and Jaclyn Bonk as well as eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Glendale Nursing Home for the four plus years of care and compassion given to Bill.

Funeral Services for Bill will begin on Thursday February 23, 2023, at 10:15AM at the Bond Funeral Home 1614 Guilderland Avenue Schenectady followed by a Mass at 11AM at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church 210 Princetown Road Rotterdam. Calling hours will be Wednesday evening from 5-7PM at the funeral home.

Interment will be in St. Cyril Cemetery in Rotterdam.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Bill’s memory to the Schenectady City Mission 425 Hamilton Street Schenectady NY 12305 or the Alzheimer’s Association 1003 Loudon Road Cohoes, NY 12047.
