Virginia H. Mickey, 83, died on Sunday December 9, 2007 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany after a long and full life. Ellen Virginia Hill was born on April 2, 1924 in Gastonia, NC and was the daughter of Vigil Lusk Hill Sr. and Eva Ellen Dilling. She had two sisters, Dorothy and Margaret, and a brother Virgil Jr. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Mickey Sr. They were married July 24, 1947 after his return from service in the Army in WWII, until his untimely death in 1970. They had two sons, Harry and Charles Jr. She grew up in High Point, NC and lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, NC. She received her Bachelor's degree from Western Carolina Teacher's College in 1945 and her Master of Education degree in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She retired in 1987 after 31 years in the Forsyth County school system. She began her career as a history teacher, and retired as one of the first female high school principals in North Carolina. She was appointed to the North Carolina Textbook Commission by the Governor of North Carolina, and served from 1965 to 1969. Virginia loved to travel. Two of her favorite trips were to Russia and Norway. After she retired, she took many trips with the Elder-Hostel program because she liked to visit new places and learn new things. She enjoyed live performances of plays and opera, as well as dining with family and friends. Virginia is survived by a brother, Rear Admiral Virgil L Hill, Jr. (USN-Ret) of Ambler, PA; two sons, Charles A Mickey, Jr. of Asheville, NC, and Harry R Mickey of Guilderland; one grandson, Charles A Mickey III of Winston-Salem, NC; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Lee Mickey of Clemmons, NC and Catherine Ann Mickey of Guilderland; and many nieces and nephews. Viewing hours will be on Friday, December 14th from 7 to 9 pm at the Salem Funeral Home, 120 South Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. A service will be held on Saturday December 15th at 11 am at Home Moravian Church. Interment will be in God's Acre at Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC. Memorial contributions may be made in Virginia's memory to Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. Local Arrangements are by the Bond Funeral Home Broadway and Guilderland Avenue Schenectady.
