Virginia S. Barhydt, 93, beloved Nana to her family, passed away Wednesday morning December 28, 2022 in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Katherine (Burkowski) Sendzicki.
A graduate of Nott Terrace High School, Virginia worked for the Northeast Savings Bank in Schenectady until her retirement as a financial aid officer. She was also a former lab assistant at K.A.P.L, a position she was always particularly proud of.
Virginia was a member of St. Katarina Parish in Schenectady, the Rotterdam Elks L.O.R.E # 2157, the 3rd Order of St Francis and Rotterdam Senior Citizens. Virginia is predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years Herbert J. Barhydt, Jr. who she married February 3, 1951.
Virginia was a child of the Great Depression, and often told how her family was the first on the block to own a TV. A self-professed tomboy, Virginia stood strong among her three brothers. She was athletic, especially loved golfing and bowling, and enjoyed driving her sporty blue Mustang. She played a mean accordion, loved to dance, knew every polka song worth singing and she had a very elegant dressing style. She cherished sailing the oceans many times over with her husband and absolute love of her life, Herbert "John".
Virginia had a forward-thinking mentality and open mindset. She readily moved into a new house with her son Kevin’s family at age 84, and created a whole new life after her husband had passed. Virginia was always willing to explore new experiences and enjoyed the authentic (many of them unknown to her) Japanese food Elly made. Even after a major car accident at age 87, she quickly recovered, made plans to visit her Florida family, and was back on the beach with her granddaughter LeeAnn and great grandsons within a few months.
Virginia was always humble before God and generous to all, reminding us of the story "The Giving Tree.” She always exhibited a calm and kind strength that only ever brought love and positivity into our life. She was gentle, funny, loving and accepting. What always stood out the most was her ability to persevere. She was, and always will be, our superhero.
Virginia is survived by her son Kevin J. Barhydt (Elly) of Niskayuna, grandchildren, Tyler Barhydt, Kentaro Barhydt, Angel Jackson, and LeeAnn Jones (Bryant), great grandchildren, Liam, Josiah and Christopher Jones (Meta), and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was also predeceased by her brothers, Paul, Frank and John Sendzicki.
