Viola E. Welch, 93, died Sunday, September 30,2007 at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs. She was the widow of Robert A. Welch who died in 1975. Born July 18, 1914 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Frederick and Louise Diemer. Viola and Robert were married June 4, 1938 in Schenectady. She resided there until her recent move to Saratoga, first living in the Bellevue area of Schenectady, then in Niskayuna. Viola was a lifelong member of Bellevue Reformed Church where she sang in the church choir for many years. Viola loved music and was one of the founding members of the Schenectady Light Opera Company that originated in Bellevue as the Bellevue Young People's Chorus under the direction of the late Etta Moore. Viola also loved books and was an avid reader. After raising her family,she worked at the Union Book Store in downtown Schenectady for a few years, and then worked at the Schaeffer Library, Union College, retiring in 1977. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Bill Fedory of Cambridge, NY; her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Linda Welch of Jonesville;five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren plus several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Beatrice Sharp and a brother, Gilbert Diemer (Helen) both of Schenectady, and several nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon October 5th at 1 pm at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Ave.,Schenectady, NY. A calling hour will preceed the service from 12 to 1pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Schenectady Memorial Park, Rotterdam, NY. The family requests memorial donations be made to Bellevue Reformed Church-Music Fund, 2000 Broadway, Schenectady, NY 12306 or the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research, Capital NY Region, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY,12211.
