Valerie Santo

Valerie Santo, 73, of Schenectady passed away at Ellis Hospital on Friday January 8, 2021. Born in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine (Van Buren) Oleschak.

She was employed as a dental assistant for the dental practice of Dr. Paul Rasmussen. Valerie was a member of the Bellevue Reformed Church in Schenectady.

Valerie overcame many obstacles in her life, but despite these struggles she always had a smile on her face. She was strong-willed, determined and would always tell you what was on her mind. Valerie was also a kind and gentle soul. She loved and was loved by many. She had a powerful bond with her daughter Shannon, whom she called her “lover dolly”.

Valerie always showed her affection and love for her daughter and grandchildren with “Butterfly Kisses”. She also passionately enjoyed socializing with her friends known as the “Golden Girls”.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her sister Linda Pulver.

Valerie is survived by her loving daughter Shannon Wetzel (Frederick) of Niskayuna, her adoring grandchildren Austine Martin (Sean), Maxine Wetzel and Aria Wetzel. She is also survived by her devoted sisters Kathy Hobbs (Joe Esposito) of Albany, Joyce Overstreet (Late Walt) of Scotia, Gloria Bianchi (Bob) of Schenectady and Christine Muscanell (Bob) of Saratoga as well as several nieces and nephews and her close friend of many years Harry Brand.

A Gathering of family and friends will be planned at a future date to celebrate Valerie’s life.
