S Arthur Devey

S. Arthur Devey 90 died Sunday October 18, 2009 after a brief illness. Born on September 3, 1919 in Highlands, NJ. to Sidney Arthur and Ada Elizabeth (Vaughan) Devey. A graduate from Middletown Township High School he served from 1941-1946 in the Marine Corps in the Pacific. Upon his return from WWII he studied at Phoenix School of Design in New York. He worked at several advertising agencies in NY as a graphic designer before relocating in 1954 to Schenectady, NY to open a branch office of Mayshark & Keyes. Subsequently he opened his own advertising agency ADS (Advertisers Design Service) which later merged to become MacDonald, Devey & Holdsworth. Later a new partnership was formed to create Devey, Thompson & Vignola (DTV). Arthur retired from advertising in 1981 to pursue his passion of painting, particularly portraits. Several of his portraits hang at various institutions, businesses and museums. In 1999 he held a one man retrospective of 50 years of painting at the Walter Elwood Museum in Amsterdam. Arthur was a resident of Princetown for 52 years and was active in various town activities including the senior center and was also an avid golfer and bowler. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years Patricia Phyllis (Knapp), sisters Ada Grace Moore and Lois Irma Biedermann both for Atlantic Highlands, NJ. He is survived by his daughter Candice Marnee Devey and husband Charles Goldstein and their two daughters Natalie and Vivian and his long time companion June Walsh. Also surviving are nieces Holly Knapp of MA, Robin Slamp of NJ and Laurie Creighton of NJ. A memorial service will be held on Sunday November 22, 2009 at 1pm at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, NY Interment was private.
