Robert L. Smith, 96, of Schenectady passed away after a long illness at the Glendale Home on Wednesday February 14, 2024. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Lester and Euretta (Cranneli) Smith.
He was a graduate of Draper High School.
Bob was employed as a yard conductor of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. After retiring from the railroad, he was the owner of S & M Carpet.
He was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church in Schenectady and later joined Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Rotterdam. Bob was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob was passionate about gardening and woodworking and spent countless hours in his woodworking shop. He also was passionate about deer hunting.
He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Emily (Morrett) Smith and sister Beatrice Crandall.
The family would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to the Erie Crossing and Union Station Units at Glendale Home for their care of Dad.
Robert is survived his loving children Gail D. Barber (late James) and Gary R. Smith of Rotterdam, his brother in law Donald Morrett of Schenectady and his grandchildren Justin Barber, Aubrey Galietta, Joshua Smith (Sara), Nicholas Smith (Jennifer) and Ryan Barber (Amanda Davis). He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Bob will be on Monday February 19, 2024 at 10:30AM at Bond Funeral Home 1614 Guilderland Avenue Schenectady followed by a Mass at 11AM at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church 210 Princetown Rd Rotterdam. A Visitation will be from 9-10:30 am prior at the funeral home.
Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
