REXFORD, NY – Paul E. Vellano, 72, went to be with the lord on January 8, 2025, in the comfort of his home.
Paul was a devoted husband, adoring father, cherished “Pop-Pop”, caring brother, loving uncle and loyal friend. His life was a testament to hard work, love and care – all of which were instilled from an early age.
Born on March 10, 1952, in Schenectady, NY, Paul was the loving son of the late Anthony and Antoinette (DeGasperis) Vellano, along with his two brothers, Anthony Vellano Jr. and the late Joseph Vellano.
Paul’s greatest joy was his family – his devoted wife of 40 years, Joney, was the love of his life, with whom he shared two cherished sons, Paul and Joseph. Paul dedicated his life to his boys – showing them the way, leading by example.
Paul was raised in the Bellevue section of Schenectady, where he attended St. Joseph’s Academy and graduated from Bishop Gibbons High School. After graduating, he attended the University of Maryland, earning a bachelor’s degree and excelling on the football field, earning both All-American and All-ACC honors. Paul was drafted by the Chicago Bears, ultimately playing in the WFL with both the Florida Blazers and San Antonio Wings, receiving league honors.
After football, Paul entered into the family business, Vellano Bros Inc, working alongside his father Anthony, uncle John, two brothers Joseph and Anthony Jr., and cousins John and James for over 40 years.
Paul had a very accomplished career in football and business, but his biggest accomplishment was giving back to countless people along the way and creating lasting memories. Always finding the good in every situation, he was a selfless and generous man. Enjoying life, with an incredible sense of humor.
Some of Paul’s favorite things to do were spending time at Lake George and travelling with his family. He had a passion for supporting everything his sons were a part of, committing his time and energy to enhance the experience of everyone involved. He loved being a part of the CBA community, of which both his sons attended, and he was a member of the Hall of Fame. He enjoyed countless tailgates with his Maryland football family and friends. One of his greatest joys was in the simple things, playing and watching his grandson grow - sharing Reese Cups with Pauley, who adored him beyond measure. He will be missed each day, but his love and legacy will live on for a lifetime.
Paul is survived by his wife, Joney; children Paul (Monique) Vellano and Joseph Vellano (Stephanie Gimondo); grandson, Pauley, granddaughter, Brooklyn and brother, Anthony Jr. (Holly) Vellano, (late brother Joseph (Penny) Vellano), sister in law Fran (Rich) Marini, brother in law James Smith (Deb Kissane) and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Visitation hours are scheduled for 5-8PM Wednesday, January 15th at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Ave, Schenectady. A funeral service will be held at 11:30AM, Thursday, January 16th at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville.
