Marian S. Sevinsky, 87, of Rotterdam, died on Sunday, in the presence of her son Jim and her close niece, Jacqueline Ahl. Marian was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of 56 years, Zigmont James Sevinsky. Marian was born in Coudersport, Pa., July 9, 1924, to the late Reginald Shenton and Alice Belle Colcord Shenton. She moved to Schenectady with her family in 1942 and married Zig, also from Coudersport, Pa. Zig was soon drafted into the Army for combat duty in the South Pacific. Marian worked for GE in Schenectady for 9 years, where, among other positions, she led a Personnel Office unit that arranged for Selective Service deferrals for key engineers and scientists necessary to support the US in World War 2. Marian later worked as Office Manager for Capital Forestry in Niskayuna. Marian was a parishioner of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Schenectady and spent many years working with the Carmen Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Marian was quite generous and giving to her family, friends and those in need. She contributed regularly to charitable organizations that champion the needs of the sick, the developmentally disabled, homeless people, Native Americans and veterans, among others. When she needed assistance in recent years, neighbors and friends helped, enabling her to live independently in her home of 61 years. Marian is survived by her son, James Sevinsky (Robin); sisters Dorothy Belle Stevens and Betty Lou Stewart; granddaughter Sarah E. Gilchrist, grandson Christopher J. Sevinsky (Stacie), great grandchildren Christopher Zigmont Sevinsky, Logan E. Sevinsky, Taylor Christine Gilchrist and Sophie E. Gilchrist; and her beloved grandniece, Allison Ahl. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother David Shenton as well as by her husband Zigmont. Special thanks to niece Jacqueline Stevens Ahl for her loving assistance over many years, to the neighbors and friends who looked out for her, to the Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels program and to the staff at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who cared for her over the past month. Calling hours for friends and family will be from 6 PM to 7 PM on Thursday at Bond Funeral Home, Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.
