Mary A. Wilcox (Hatala) 94, peacefully passed away Friday October 2, 2026, at Albany Medical Center after a long illness. Mary was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Mary was born July 2, 1932, in Torrington, CT to the late John Hatala and Anna Kirila-Hatala before the family moved to Galway, NY. Mary worked as a senior clerk for the NYS DMV for 40 years and a part-time hostess for Yankee Trails for 25 years. She loved her family, traveling, gardening and doing things for others; she had mastered crocheting - blankets, hats and scarves that she gave as gifts to everyone. She also had a deep passion for cooking recipes from her Slavic heritage; her home always smelling of klusky’s, pierogi’s, pumpkin soup or stuffed cabbage and if you were lucky some rogolough. It was your own fault if you ever left her house hungry.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her 2 children, John C Wilcox and Patricia J Sowle-Wilcox; and her granddaughter Amy Sowle-Johndrow. She is survived by her daughter Linda Wilcox (Steve), her two sons Rhit (Richard) Wilcox (Mary V) and Michael Wilcox (Cindy); her grandchildren, Jon Wilcox (Jackie), Samantha Torngren (Steve) and Sarah Wilcox; as well as several great-grandchildren. Mary requested no services and will be buried alongside her family in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Galway, NY.
