Martha Jane Chattin Cole, 90, passed away on April 10, 2007, in Schenectady, New York. Born in Union City, Indiana, on September 28, 1916, Martha Jane was the daughter of the late Clyde and Mabel Chattin. Her fond memories of childhood included her parents' house on Howard Street and movies at the old Grand Theater .Martha Jane graduated from Union City High School in 1933 and attended Ward Belmont College and Wellesley College, from which she graduated in 1937. In 1939 she married Austin Cole, who was the principal of Union City High School. During their married life they lived in Union City, Richmond, and New Albany, Indiana, as well as Huntington,New York, Verona and Madison, New Jersey, and Greenville, Ohio.Martha Jane taught French, English, and Latin, and was very proud of her career as a teacher .Teaching French also piqued her curiosity about travel, and she enjoyed several trips to France and other parts of Europe. Her favorite was her last trip, when she went to London and Paris with Austin and their daughters, Beverly and Barbara. During the nearly 30 years that Martha Jane and Austin lived in New Jersey, they also loved visiting New York City and attending Broadway shows. She also kept busy with Drew University Wives' Club, American Association of University Women, and caring for her much-loved cat, Desi. In 1991 Martha Jane moved to Glenville, New York, to be near her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She continued her interest in world events and loved to talk politics.She followed the weather forecasts and made sure to issue weather warnings and road condition reports to all her family. And she consistently won at " Jeopardy" .Martha Jane is predeceased by her husband, Austin A. Cole, her parents, Clyde and Mabel Chattin, and her brother, Robert N. Chattin.She is survived by her daughters, Beverly Cole Boston and her husband Robert, Barbara ColeNotch and her husband Peter of Glenville, New York, and her grandchildren Elizabeth Boston and Brian Boston and his wife, Katrina. Martha Jane's great grandchildren are Christopher and Tara Gage and Joshua Boston. In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Anne Smith of Union City, Indiana, and Eileen Thomas and her husband Bill of Greenville, Ohio, her brother William R. Chat tin and his wife Martha of Indianapolis and her sister-in-Iaw Millie Chat tin, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Two nieces, Nikki Meredith and Jan Livingston, reside in Union City.Funeral arrangements are by Reichert Funeral Home, Union City, Indiana. There will be a visitation hour at the Wesley United Methodist Church for family and friends on Monday April 16,2007 from 11 to 12 noon followed by the funeral service at 12 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady, 53 Maple Ave, Scotia, NY 12302 or a charity of Choice.
