Marilyn J Lyons

November 1, 1933 — January 6, 2015

Marilyn J. Lyons was born on November 1, 1933, the youngest of five children born to the late Geraldine and Theodore Roby in Amsterdam, New York. She departed this life at her home in Schenectady, New York on January 6, 2015 after a long illness. Marilyn was a product of Amsterdam city schools. She met and married David Lyons on December 15, 1951; David preceded Marilyn in death in 2007. From this union, six children were born; Davilyn, Todd (deceased), Mark (deceased), Cory, Jody and Renee. Her special bond with those who became extended family included "sons" Al Jurczynski, Robert Jones and Tyrone Nelson, and her nephew Marty (Nelva) Teabout. Marilyn's life - her entire life - was devoted to her family and by extension, the Schenectady community. She was a long time member of the Hamilton Hill Neighborhood Association, served on the Advisory Board Police Community Center with Sergeant Ray Wemple, and served on the Hamilton Hill Task Force, and was a friend, advisor and confidante to former Schenectady Mayor Al Jurczynski. Marilyn was also a mentor and often surrogate parent or grandparent to many youth in Hamilton Hill and the Schenectady community, many of them fondly referring to her as "Ma." For many years, Marilyn was a member of the Albany Street United Methodist Church in Schenectady. She served on several boards while a member there. In 1997, Marilyn joined Duryee Memorial AME Zion Church in Schenectady, New York, and remained active in the church as long as her health permitted. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life four daughters: Davilyn (Ricky). Cory (Michael Griffin), Jody and Renee (Darin); daughter-in-law: Jacqueline, 8 grandchildren: Madrea (Jerome), Frank, Mark, Rahmar, Theodore, Rayquan, Diasia, and Kaliah; five great-grandchildren, Ajaya, Ajanae, Jace, Nehemiah Quinton and Jaden. There are many members of the extended family - nieces, nephews and loved ones - whose life was touched by the love of Marilyn Lyons. Visitations will be held Tuesday evening, January 13th from 7-9pm at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, and also Wednesday, January 13th, 10am-12pm at Refreshing Springs Church, 327 Georgetta Dix Plaza, Schenectady, with a service to follow at 12pm. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie. Contributions in Marilyn's name can be made to Community Hospice, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308.
