Maria Korzenietz

Maria Korzenietz (Gliebe), 90, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, in Schenectady, NY.

She was born on November 7, 1934 in the German city of Gottschee, in what is now Slovenia. She and her mother and siblings survived WWII and fled to Austria where she spent most of her formative years.  As the oldest of her siblings, at the young age of 16 she ventured to America and found work opportunities to help her surviving family in Europe.  She eventually settled in Ridgewood, NY where she met her husband Willi Korzenietz, who also survived WWII and immigrated to NY.  They both worked and over the years they built a remarkable life together.

A quiet and petite woman, Maria enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking, and always looked forward to traveling and taking cruises.  She will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, and undeniable love for her family, and will be greatly missed.

Maria is predeceased by her sisters Margit Gliebe, Elsa Missbrenner, and her brother, Tschan Gliebe.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years, Willi Korzenietz; her daughter Sabine Korzenietz and son-in-law Jacques Fournier, and her treasured and beloved grandchildren Julien Fournier and Elise Fournier; her sisters Sofe Gliebe, Traude Gliebe (Stefan Gubic), and Edith Eisenkolbl (Rudi Eisenkolbl); her nieces Petra Eisenkolbl, and Doris Gliebe; and great-niece Christina Gliebe.  She is also survived by her niece Angelika Schonefeld; and nephews Christian Korzenietz (Anja), and Lutz Kleeman.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home for their friendship and devoted care given to her during her last few years.

Funeral services will begin on Friday February 21, 2025 at Bond Funeral Home 1614 Guilderland Avenue Schenectady with a visitation from 9:30am-10:30an followed by a Mass at 11AM at St. Gabriel’s Church 3040 Hamburg Street Rotterdam. Interment in St. Adalbert’s Cemetery in Rotterdam.
