Lorraine Audrey Marchione, 92, formerly of Rotterdam, NY, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021, in Austin, TX.
She was born in Rotterdam to the late Amalia (“Mollie” Anderson) and Charles P. Burke, Rotterdam Town Supervisor (1964-66). She graduated from Draper High School and attended Columbia College in South Carolina, graduating summa cum laude in 1950. She also attended the National University of Mexico, Mexico City.
Lorraine was engaged in her community and dedicated to social justice. She served as a literacy tutor and chairwoman of Literacy Volunteers of Schenectady and was a member of Church Women United.
Lorraine was employed as a teacher in the English as a Second Language and GED preparation programs at Washington Irving Adult & Continuing Education Center, Schenectady City Schools. Teaching English Language Learners and meeting people from other countries and cultures was her most rewarding career experience.
Lorraine liked to read, and to write poetry, but her passion was golf. She was proud of her record five holes-in-one scored at Whispering Pines and Stadium Golf Club. Lorraine also enjoyed her many years as a member of the Early Birds Golf League at Stadium.
Known for her blue eyes and fiery wit, Lorraine was a good and kind friend to many. A faithful correspondent, she nurtured and maintained decades-long relationships with family and friends despite geographic distance or the passage of years.
Predeceased in 2014 by her husband of nearly 60 years Matthew C. Marchione, Lorraine was also predeceased by her brother, Donald C. Burke. Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Mollie T. Marchione (Barbara Jones) of Austin, TX, and her granddaughter, Rosalinda.
All services are private at the convenience of her family.
Interment in Viewland Cemetery in Rotterdam, NY
