Lois Marjorie Troup, 95, was born in Schenectady, the daughter of Cora and Clinton W. Sager of Bellevue. She had two younger brothers, Douglas C. Sager and Robert W. Sager, who predeceased her in 1998 and 2003. Lois was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School, Class of 1939, and received her teaching degree from Oneonta State Teacher's College in 1943 after which she taught for 4 years at John Bigsbee School in Rotterdam. In 1945 she married Earl W. Troup, her husband of 48 years until his death in 1993. In 1949, Lois and 'Troup' purchased an abandoned farm in Princetown that they renovated and made their home for the remainder of their lives. Lois resumed her teaching career in 1956 at Mariaville Central School which became part of the Schalmont Central School District circa 1959. After 12 years as kindergarten teacher and librarian, she became Acting Principal of Mariaville Elementary School until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the Schenectady County Retired Teachers Association, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Oneonta Alumni Association and the GE Elfun Society. Lois loved "The Farm" and her horses, and she loved Schenectady. She was a member of the Schenectady County Historical Society and an avid patron of the Schenectady Civic Players. Lois' passion in later years was her annual hat party at the Stockade Inn. It started with lunch for seven lady friends in hats and the event grew to a gathering of over 50 female attendees adorned in their finest millinery and treated to live lunchtime entertainment. At the age of 94 Lois hosted her 14th and last hat party which made the front page of the Daily Gazette. She is survived by her sons Greg Troup and his life partner Marissa French of Princetown, and Kent Troup and his wife Patty of New York City, her sisters-in-law Clare Sager of South Berwick, Maine and Marjorie Sager of Crystal Beach, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Lois' life will be held on Sunday afternoon, March 5th, at 3:00 PM at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway at Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. A gathering of relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home from 1 to 3 PM prior to the celebration. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to Community Hospice (www.communityhospice.org) or Plotterkill Volunteer Fire Company, 3985 Putnam Road, Schenectady 12306.
