Julia “Maria” Santiago (67), of Schenectady New York, passed away Sunday July 6, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, NY on November 10, 1957 to Julio and Juanita Santiago, she spent most of her life in East New York. She was raised amongst Seven brothers and a sister shaping her into the strong, nurturing woman so many came to admire. A devoted mother, sister, and grandmother, she is remembered most for the boundless love she gave to her family; especially her grandchildren, who were the light of her life and the center of her world. She is survived by her four daughters: Maria, Elizabeth, Emily, and Jacinta, and her eight cherished grandchildren: Chastity, David Jr., Xavier, Arianna, Gabriel, Kehlani, Alex, and Melanie.In her working years, she served her Brooklyn community as a dedicated school crossing guard. In this role, she became a familiar and beloved figure to local families who knew her for her warm smile, gentle nature, and unwavering care for others. Neighborhood families befriended her and respected her as a kind soul. Her presence was one of comfort and kindness to all who crossed her path. She retired due to illness in 2007, although she remained a pillar of strength and compassion within her family and neighborhood.Despite the challenges she faced, she continued to lead with courage, grace, and selflessness. Her resilience and inner courage inspired those around her and continue to do so. Maria is most known for her strength due to battling through illness while still being there for those she loved. Her genuine care always shined through despite any hardships she faced and she continuously led with grace and genuine care for others. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: trips to the casino, dining out, and, most of all, spending time surrounded by those she loved. Whether at family gatherings or big celebrations, she thrived in the energy of her loved ones. A proud Puerto Rican woman and true New York Rican, she carried her heritage with pride, dancing to the rhythms of her culture, sharing stories, and filling her home with laughter and music.Her grandchildren remember her not only as a grandmother but as a best friend, amazing storyteller, #1 cheerleader, and a guiding light. Her laughter, warmth, and wisdom will be dearly missed but forever cherished.She was our rock, our joy, and our heart. Her legacy of love and resilience lives on in the lives she touched.
