James D. Schmitt 87, died on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Ellis Hospital Schenectady of Cardiac arrest. He was the spouse of Werner L. Feibes who was also his partner in the firm of Feibes & Schmitt, Architects who produced many buildings in Schenectady including the much recognized Schenectady County Public Library. When Schmitt came to Schenectady in 1956 he and Werner joined Giles Van der Bogert to establish the firm of Van der Bogert, Feibes and Schmitt. Giles had deep roots in Schenectady and grew up in the Stockade. He was instrumental in promoting, interest in historic preservation which Jim picked up with great enthusiasm. This eventually resulted in Jim becoming the first president of the Stockade Association which in turn eventually resulted in Schenectady establishing the first Historic District Zoning Ordinance in New York State. He had a passionate interest in abstract art which resulted in the forming of a recognized Feibes & Schmitt Collection which has lent their works to major museums. The celebration of Schmitt's life will take place Wednesdaay July 3, 2013 at the Van Dyck Restaurant 237 Union St., Schenectady from 5 to 7 p.m. Inurnment at Vale Cemetery Wednesday at 3 p.m. In recognition of Schmitt, donations can be made to The Schenectady Heritage Foundation PO Box 1173 Schenectady, NY 12301 and they will be much appreciated.,
