James B Murphy

August 11, 1915 — December 3, 2005

James B. Murphy 90 of Rotterdam died Saturday evening December 3, 2005 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home. Born in Schenectady James was the son of the late John J. and Annie (Daley) Murphy. James was a graduate of Draper Schools and received his Bachelors and Masters degree in Teaching form Oneonta Normal School. During World War II James served as a corporal for the Army Air Force where he received several metals and commendations. A teacher for over 40 years, James was a principal at Draper High School and Elementary School for over 25 years before his retirement. He was a founding member of the Rotterdam Knights of Columbus, an officer for AARP, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Rotterdam Elks, Rotterdam Kiwanis, Rotary and the Lions Club. James was a square dance caller and teacher who love music and played the bass fiddle with several bands over the years. He loved playing bridge, the New York Yankee's and playing cards with his grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother John J. Murphy and 3 sisters, Mary Kelleher, Jane F. Murphy and Eileen Nicklaw. James is survived by his wife for 56 years Edith (Clairmont) Murphy who he married on May 21, 1949, 2 children; James J. Murphy and wife Susan of Elizaville, NY and Patricia A. Hallenbeck and husband Mark of Pecks Lake, NY, a sister Anna E Murphy of Mesquite, NV, 5 grandchildren; Don Hillmann, Leigha Hillmann, Jason Hillmann, Rachael Hillmann and John Hallenbeck and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning December 7, 2005 at 9:15 am at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Ave, Schenectady followed at 10 am at Immaculate Conception Church, Bradt St, Schenectady where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 pm. Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Contribution may be made in James's memory to Immaculate Conception Church, 520 Hegaman Street, Schenectady, NY 12306
