Scotia, NY - Gladys A. Relyea-Moore (Nee: Elmendorf), 101, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2023 at Baptist Nursing and Rehab in Scotia, New York. She was born in Schenectady, New York on May 2, 1922 a daughter of Wendell H. and Helen (Lawson) Elmendorf.
Gladys was a 1940 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. Following high school, she was employed as a tracer at General Electric. She married Donald Relyea on August 14, 1942. In 1951 she and Don joined First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady. The two of them were active in the church, serving in the Sunday School and youth ministries. They served on the board of Camp Pattersonville and were active in the life of the camp. Gladys worked for a time at WGY and retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Upon retirement she and Don moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where they were active members of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. Gladys enjoyed volunteering at Greenville Memorial Hospital rocking babies and taking the hospital shop cart from room to room.
Gladys was a talented seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and her children. She enjoyed knitting and sewing quilts.
Gladys is survived by her sister Marian Demgen of Branford, Connecticut, her son Barry (Karen) Relyea (Halfmoon, NY), and daughter Christine (Philip) Schiesswohl (Halfmoon, NY). She is also survived by her grandchildren Tania Relyea (Cincinnati, OH), Keira Barnes (Waterford, NY), and Catie (Dan) Magil (Niskayuna, NY) as well as four great grandchildren, Shannon and Connor Barnes and Molly and Ian Magil. She is also survived by an extensive extended family of nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husbands Donald Relyea and Johnnie Moore, her brothers Carl (Carolyn) Elmendorf and Wendell (Mary) Elmendorf Jr, sister Betty (Les) Quay, brother-in-law Harry Demgen, daughter-in-law Yetta Relyea and granddaughter Peronelle Schiesswohl.
Gladys was very close to her granddaughter, Peronelle, who sadly passed away about the same time.
Fittingly, a memorial service will be held for both Gladys and Peronelle on Friday August 4th at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 209 Union Street, Schenectady, NY. Interment will be at Jonesville Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Gladys’s name to Camp Pattersonville (P.O. Box 105 Pattersonville, NY 12137) or to the scholarship fund at Mekeel Christian Academy (36-38 Sacandaga Road, Scotia, New York 12302).
