George W. Long 85 died Tuesday August 6, 2013 at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam. Born in Schenectady, George was the son of the late George and Anna (Heigel) Long and a graduate of Schenectady Vocational School. A former employee of the Schenectady County highway Department for 10 years, George retired in 1992 from the Golub Corporation as the supervisor of vehicle maintenance after 20 years of service. A cofounder and Past Chief of the Potterkill Volunteer Fire Department, he was a member of the Woestina Young at Heart, the Esperance Elks, the Princetown Seniors and a former Exalted Ruler of Schenectady Lodge #480 BPOE. Predeceased in 2010 by his beloved wife Ruth V. Jaeger Long, Gorge is survived by his children Laurel Bishop (George) of Schenectady, George Long (JoAnn) of Las Vegas, NV and Thomas Long (Linda) of Schenectady, a sister Arlene Van Flue of Glenville, 2 grandchildren Katie Hearn (Jerry) and George Long (Sharon), and 6 great grandchildren, Kyle, Michaela, Jacob, Korbin, Madison and Dustin. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 14th at 12 noon at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, NY. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 to 12 noon prior to the services. Interment with military honors in Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contribution may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
