George Crowningshield

d. Jun 21, 2026

Niles, NY

George A. Crowningshield Jr., 67 of Niles, NY passed away at Auburn Community Hospital on June 21, 2026.

He was born in Schenectady; the son of the late George and Bernadette (Lynch) Crowningshield Sr. George had worked for Folz Vending Company for many years and loved this job in particular, he met all different types of people on a professional level but also personally connected with them as he would make their children’s day by giving them candy and toys from his inventory, soon after he would be known as “The Candy Man”. He also worked for Appolo Heating and retired after several years of service. He graduated from SUNY Delhi Tech & Ag and Schenectady Community College with degrees in Business Administration.

George loved the great outdoors and its creatures, he enjoyed hunting and fishing but he also loved driving and his companion whoever it may be in the passenger seat would always be on their own Safari ride while he would point out every animal he sees. Most of the time he would see these animals before his passenger would. At home you could always find him sitting on his porch drinking a coffee while smoking a “Black & Mild” and watching all types of wildlife pass through the yard and he would always excitedly tell whoever he spoke to next what he had seen. He also was a New York Yankees and NASCAR sports fan, who rarely missed a game. George loved spending time with his family and friends, he was a man who always put others before himself and would give the shirt off his back for someone in need, especially his children whom he loved immensely. He went above and beyond for those he cared about and would drive hours just to help a friend with their lawn or help someone move or attend a service to pay respects. His curly locks of hair and his smile will forever be a trademark of his good looks. He had the “Gift of Gab” and everywhere he went he touched the hearts of many with his humor and charisma, in Schenectady these traits had earned him the nickname “The Mayor”.

He is survived by his children Whitney and Meghan Crowningshield, his son David Utterback, and sister Michele Crowningshield. In addition, his beloved animal companions Stella, Xena, Allie, Zoey and Ruby.
