Gary Russell Spongberg

Gary Spongberg, 81, passed away on August 31, 2024 after a long courageous battle with various health issues.  Gary was born in Worcester, MA, and raised and educated in Paxton, MA.  He was a graduate of UMASS Amherst with a degree in Civil Engineering.  Gary worked for the NYS Department of Transportation until he retired. During his time of employment, Gary took leave to serve in the US Army for three years in the late 1960s.

Gary loved the outdoors and all sports, especially the Red Sox and all Boston teams.  Gary was a top curler at the Schenectady Curling Club, where he met his wife, Lucy.  He was a winning golfer, golfing all over the world, and long time member of the Edison Club.  Playing duplicate bridge was one of Gary's favorite pastimes, culminating in becoming a Diamond Life Master (5,000+ pts.)  He loved to travel and took many trips here and abroad. Gary enjoyed being an extra, along with Lucy, on a film being made in Saratoga in 1990.  Gary was a person of many interests, and greatly appreciated all of the good times he had, especially those with his wife Lucy and family.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Lucy, and so they will be forever.  They were a beautiful couple and greatly enjoyed their lives together.  Also surviving is his stepdaughter Jane (late Frank)Corradi, and stepson Stephen (Mary Linda) Cuddy, who were especially helpful and caring during Gary's illness; and grandsons Kevin and Ryan Cuddy.  Also surviving is Gary's brother, Larry Spongberg, and cousins.

Pre-deceasing Gary were his parents, Lilla and Clifford Spongberg, and his aunt and uncle Viola and Vernon Prentice.

Gary was a sensitive, giving, kind and loving person, deeply loved by all.  You are at home with us now and forever.

A visitation will be held at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, NY on Saturday, Sept. 14, from  2-4 pm followed by a service at 4pm.  Interment will be private on Sept. 16, 2:30, at Saratoga National Cemetery.
