Ethel (DeLuke) Agresta, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on December 14, 2023. Ethel lived a full life of 94 years, 71 of those years married to her loving husband Ernest, who she is now reunited with in Heaven.
Born and raised in Duanesburg, she was the daughter of John and Theresa DeLuke. Ethel grew up on a farm with 9 other siblings, she was the youngest daughter. In her early years she was part of the plane spotting club during WW2 and also class treasurer. Deciding the farm life was not for her, she moved to the “big city” of Schenectady with her husband to raise their family. Throughout her life she was a fierce advocate for education and financial independence, especially for women.
Although she was quiet, she took great pride in keeping an orderly house and preparing a home-cooked meal. Her biggest accomplishment was raising her four loving children; Bruce (Karen) Agresta, John (Lisa) Agresta, Martha (Bruce) Turek, and Teresa (Don) Thornton. Throughout their lives she enjoyed making sure they had what they needed. She even challenged her husband by providing a pool for their kids, proving her determination to create a joyful and fulfilling childhood for them. In her later years, she found comfort and care from the very children she had poured so much love into.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her caring sister Margaret Gilday, her grandchildren Kristina (Justin), Nikko, Joelle (Mike), Tyler (Tesia), Anthony, Marisa, Danielle, Ryan, Thomas, and Alexander) and great grandchildren (Madeline, Penelope, Emersen, Annabelle, Kaiden, Kai, and Adeline).
Known for her tough love, she guided her children and grandchildren through life's challenges, fostering independence and strength in each of them. She will be remembered for her honesty, fairness, and famous questions such as “Did you have enough to eat?” and “Didn’t you bring a coat?”. Ethel will be missed every day, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
The family would like to recognize and thank everyone involved in caring for Ethel during this difficult time. Special thanks to Amina, Sandi and Razia for providing a safe, compassionate care while home. We would also like to recognize the caring staff at Ellis hospital (A3) and the dedicated staff of Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice in her name.
