Saturday, April 1, 2023 Betty passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love and adoration of her family. Born in Albany on June 19, 1942, Betty was raised by her mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Atchinson, and grandmother, Elizabeth “Betty” Skinner. Upon graduating from Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School in 1960, Betty pursued her passion for children and caregiving, earning a certificate for the Care of Infants and Children from Saint Catherine Infant Home, where she worked, taking care of babies, until she married and had her own.
Settling in a Rotterdam neighborhood full of friends, Betty began her second career as Mom and Homemaker. Betty raised four kids of her own and was a surrogate mother to dozens of others. Betty devoted her life to taking care of her family, raising her kids in a home filled with joy, happiness, music and love. When her youngest started school, Betty went back into the workforce and found another career; Queen of Subway. She worked there for 34 years, until Alzheimer’s Disease forced her to retire at 70.
Betty never met a stranger. She made friends easily and kept them for life. She will be remembered for her forever smile, her kindness, her doot doot dah-doots, and for always, always doing the right thing. Betty was the very best of humanity.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bill (Lyn) Bednarowski, Susan (Jim) Ryder, Cheryl Bednarowski and Karen (Kurt) Neubauer, grandchildren Julie (Stephen) Brucker, Troy Moran, and Jamie, Corey and Christopher Ryder, great grandaughter Raegan, brother Ronnie Atchinson, nieces and nephews.
