Dorothy Corless Sawler, 94, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 26,2022, with her daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter by her side.
Dorothy lived a long, full and boisterous life that began on August 31, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY. The daughter of Elsie Acker and John Corless, Dorothy was the third of eight siblings, and leaves behind her youngest sister Anna Stay. Dorothy became a farm girl when the family moved to Worcester, NY, where she attended Worcester Central Schools until graduation in 1946. She began working at New York Tel (now Verizon) when she was 18 years old and met her first husband through the switchboard. They had two daughters, Marcia Galka and Louise Novak, and settled in Rotterdam. She retired in 1993 after working over 40 years, with a grand celebration. Dorothy quite enjoyed celebrations of all kinds.
Dorothy was an avid reader. So much so that as a girl, she was given the task of reading and writing book reports for her sister who hated it. She devoured books, and later in life when her eyesight failed her, she devoured Kindle stories. She loved to play cards of any kind, especially when dollar bets were involved.
Dorothy spent much of her time traveling with her second husband, but nowhere in the world came close to her favorite spot Wells Beach, Maine. The ocean is missing a significant amount of lobster thanks to Dorothy, as it was her favorite. Dorothy brought joy and mischief to everyone who was lucky enough to know her, and was a rock of support to her nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren. She was a fan in the stands at every sporting event that her grandchildren participated in, even if it was not her favorite (baseball). Later on she attended her great grandchildren’s baseball games and rewarded them with cash for getting hits. There is no doubt she will be keeping a close watch over her 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren (Anne, Meghann, Courtney, Chet, Chad, Devin, Tyler, Matilda, Anabelle, Arlo, Lucien, Willow, Henry, and Eleanor) that she left here on Earth. Dorothy was as opinionated as she was generous. She would speak her truth at all times and was there for those she loved anytime they needed her. To say she will be sorely missed is an understatement.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Sunday afternoon October 2nd from 12 to 3 pm at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, NY.
In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s research hospital or to the Schenectady City Mission
