Doris M Almstead (Mattfeld)

Doris M. Almstead of Schenectady, formerly of Clifton Park, passed away Friday, April 10, 2015, at the age of 99. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Francis E. Almstead. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Meta (Ranken) and Frederick Mattfeld. She is survived by her three children and their spouses Karen Meade (Robert), John Almstead (Linda), and Karl Almstead (Barbara); six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Doris graduated from Adelphi University and pursued an advanced degree in English from Columbia University. She started her career as a high school English teacher at Mepham High School on Long Island. While raising a family she earned a Masters in Library Science degree from SUNY Albany. She was the first librarian at Hudson Valley Community College. In 1976 she retired as librarian of the Canton High School (New York). A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, in the Coburg Village Chapel, One Coburg Village Way, Rexford, NY. Interment will be at the West Stockbridge Cemetery, West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of your choice in Doris' name. Arrangements are by the Bond Funeral Home Broadway and Guilderland Avenue Schenectady.
