D Vera Cullen

d. February 19, 2018

D. Vera Cullen was born in Schenectady ninety years ago. Vera was the only child of Leroy and Doris Wilkie Andrews. She died in Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehab Facility, Chatham, MA on February 19. Her daughter Bonnie Nuendel(Don) was by her side and she had enjoyed recent visits in Schenectady with her son Drew Cullen and daughter-in-law Jan-Marie Spanard as well as grandson Colden Cullen from Seattle, granddaughter Amanda Nuendel Faulkner (Bill), great grandson Micah Faulkner and great granddaughter Naomi Faulkner. Other family members include grandsons Thomas Nuendel (Amanda Ellis) of Sheboygan and Andrew Nuendel (Lavon Pruitt) of Eastham, MA. She was the much-loved wife for 67 years of the late Fred Cullen who died in February, 2016. Vera graduated at age 16 at the top of her Draper High School class of 1944. She graduated with an RN degree from Russell Sage College, worked as a visiting nurse in NYC and was a proud member of US Cadet Nurse Corps. For more than 25 years she worked the night shift in the newborn nursery at Ellis Hospital. Her community service includes PTA, Highbridge Civic Association, FISH, the American Red Cross, and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader for many years. She was an active member of Bellevue Reformed Church where she and Fred had met in the youth group and more recently the Lynnwood Reformed Church. She and Fred enjoyed educating themselves through world travel, courses for seniors at Union College and the Interfaith Community in Schenectady. They swam regularly with a close-knit group of friends at the YWCA. They entertained their grandchildren and enjoyed maintaining relationships with extended family with whom we imagine she is happily reuniting. Boating on Sacandaga Reservoir, first on the cabin cruiser Pink Cloud and then the sailboat Serendipity was a big part of family life for over 40 years. A calling hour will be Friday February 23, 2018 from 12:30PM-1:30PM and the memorial service will be held at 1:30PM at Lynnwood Reformed Church, 3714 Carman Rd., Schenectady on Friday, February 23. Burial in Memory Gardens will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the American Red Cross, will be appreciated. American Red Cross PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839 or at:1-800-HELP NOW (1-800-435-7669)
