Charles E. Cookingham 89, formerly of Rotterdam died Friday evening July 25, 2008 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Charles was born April 7, 1919 in Schenectady, NY. He was the husband of the late Margaret K. (Melis) Cookngham for 54 years. She died in January 1997. He was the son of the late John and Loretta (Cody) Cookingham of Schenectady. He is survived by two daughters, Eileen M. Ubillos (Peter) of Clearwater, FL. and Maureen M. Brooks (John) of San Ramon, Ca, five grandchildren, Jill M. (Sasinowski) Kourafas (Charles) of Quincy, MA., M. Philip Sasinowski Jr. (Diane) of Pascoag, RI, Cody, Austin and Wyatt Brooks of San Ramon, CA. and three great grandchildren, Coranna and Tyler Sasinowski of Pascoag and William Alex Kourafas of Quincy. A life long Schenectady resident Charles was a graduate of City schools. He served in the US Army during WW II where he attained the rank of sergeant while serving while serving in Germany in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery during his service. Mr. Cookingham was a bookbinder until his retirement, beginning his trade with the former Haynes Bindery in Schenectady. For 30 years, he was the vice-president of Erie Binders, Inc. a well known Schenectady bookbinding firm he founded with his wife Margaret. After the business was sold, he remained a consultant for many years. A communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, he was a member of the Rotterdam Elks and Schenectady VFW #357. Funeral services will be held Tuesday Morning July 29th at 9:30 am at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Ave., Schenectady followed at 10:15 am at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Princetown Road, Rotterdam where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm. Entombment in St Cyril's Cemetery in Rotterdam, NY.
