Carl A Wolf

Carl A. Wolf, 97, passed away peacefully April 12, 2017 at VanRensselaer Manor in Troy, New York after a long illness. Carl was born on November 4, 1919 in Rotterdam, NY, the son of the late Arthur and Anna (Savage) Wolf. He was a lifelong area resident graduating from Draper High School and later attending college studying accounting. Carl worked for over 30 years for the former American Locomotive Company and later was employed and retired from General Electric as a cost accountant. A parishioner of Zion Lutheran Church, Carl enjoyed fishing, bowling ,gardening and he loved playing semi-pro baseball in his younger years. One of his favorite hobbies was thoroughbred racing and was a former member of the N.Y.S. Thoroughbred Breeder's, Inc. Last year you could still see him at OTB in Schenectady trying to get that "win". Carl, with the help of family, operated Imperial Lanes in Amsterdam, NY and later worked at Hi-Roc Lanes in Saratoga Springs, NY until his health forced him to retire. One of his many horses was appropriately named Alley Ball who won several stakes races. His greatest attribute was the care and concern for his family, especially his wife, who he loved dearly. Carl served his country during WW II joining the US Army. He landed the second day of the invasion, was wounded, and reported missing in action. Carl received "The Purple Heart" which he cherished. Rarely was he seen without a veteran's hat or sweatshirt proudly displaying his love, honor and respect for his country. Predeceased by his sister, Olga Lasher, his brother Albert Wolf, son-in-law Richard Higgins and Paul Gallup husband of his granddaughter, Sherri Gallup. Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years , Dorothy (Vageline) Wolf, whom he married on March 21, 1944 prior to his deployment. "Dort" never missed a day writing him a letter or sending him a small package. Survivors also include his daughter, Karen Higgins and her fiance, Henry Crow: son Karl Wolf and his wife, Sue, his four grandchildren, Sherri Gallup, Tracy Bigelow, Rachel Brzezenski and husband Christian, Ronda Wolf Macdonald and husband Verlon; nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carl is also survived by his loving dog Ashley. Carl's family would like to express their sincere thanks to the caregivers at The VanRensselaer Manor who showed genuine caring and kindness. Military honors will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 19, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871 where family and friends may gather for a celebration of Carl's life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl's memory to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 or perform an act of kindness in remembrance of Carl.
