Bertha Kriegler

Bertha Kriegler was born in Bronx NY on 5/18/1929 and passed away on 7/22/26 due to complications caused by pneumonia. She was preceeded in death by her husband of 42 years, Joseph Kriegler her mother, Libby Steinman, father Joseph Zarember, her sisters, Hannah Sidofsky and Pearl Tissavary and more recently by her beloved brother, Harold Zarember. She is survived by her three children, Mitchell, Natalie & Amy, and by her four grandchildren, Aaron, Sam, Ben & Julianne. Bertha received a Bachelor’s degree in statistics from Hunter College and a Master’s degree in library science from SUNY Albany. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at the Mt. Pleasant Bakery and later as a reference librarian at the Schenectady County Public Library. She was elected by fellow union members of the CSEA ( Civil Service Employees Association) in Schenectady to be their secretary and held the post for many years. Although she had officially retired from her part time job at the library in her 70’s, she continued to work at the library as a substitute librarian well into her 80’s. Bertha lived a life filled with love, adventure and conscience. She and her husband enjoyed sports such as tennis, volleyball ball and swimming and were both wonderful dancers including at the weekly Folk dance group gatherings held every Friday night at Union College. She enjoyed hiking and camping as well as traveling to many countries including Ireland, Mexico and Turkey. Bertha, together with her husband Joe, and friends were involved in the Civil Rights movement, and attended many protests and vigils for this great cause; she also participated in peace protests and actions to promote world peace. In her 70’s and 80’s she was a member of the local “Grannies for Peace” organization. All three of her children are classically trained musicians and Bertha loved to see and hear them perform and enjoyed music of many styles and genres ranging from opera to folk music. She also loved animals and was always concerned and charitable towards lost, abandoned and abused cats, dogs, horses and other animals.

A service will be held on Saturday, 9/12/26 from 1 PM - 3 PM at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Ave, Schenectady 12306
