Barbara J Town of Glenville, NY, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 2, 2024. She was born in Schenectady, NY on September 28, 1930 to William F and Ethel Looman.
She graduated from Nott Terrace High in June 1948 and from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1953.
She was consecrated on September 21, 1953, as a Lutheran Deaconess, and served at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Albany, NY until her marriage to Thomas W. Town on June 1, 1957.
They had three daughters: Leah, Julia, and Katharine. During the following years Barbara did substitute teaching in the Schalmont School District, worked as an Administrative Assistant at Parkhurst Children’s Shelter and took courses at Russell Sage. She was active in her church and later returned to St. Paul’s as Deaconess. She remained there until October 1994 when she moved to Lenoir, NC. There she was an active member at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, singing in the choir and was treasurer of the WELCA. Barbara was also a Hospice Volunteer and served on the Board of the Caldwell Senior Center and Caldwell Aging Leadership Planning Project 2007.
She is survived by three daughters; Leah Blanton (Gary) of Indian Land SC, Julia Town of Schenectady, NY, and Katharine Whalen (Shawn) of Rotterdam, NY, four grandchildren; Tori Compton (Kevin) of Fort Mill, SC, Cody Blanton of Raleigh, NC, Shane Whalen (McKenna) of Glenville, NY, and Erik Whalen of Nampa, ID; four great grandsons, Caleb Compton, Bradey Compton, Jase Compton and Seamus Whalen.
She is predeceased by her brothers William R Looman and John D Looman
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire staff at Judson Meadows Assisted Living Community for their ongoing dedicated care and compassion to our mom over the past 10 years. It was her home and she considered them family. We were blessed to have them caring for her.
A Celebration of Barbara’s life will be Saturday at 2PM at the Bond Funeral Home 1614 Guilderland Avenue Schenectady. Visitation will be from 1-2 prior.
Inurnment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Schenectady.
