Barbara Jean Olson, 94, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at her home in Duanesburg with her family by her side.
Barbara was born in Schenectady, New York on July 30, 1929 to John E. and Elizabeth (Harding) Mooney. She attended Nott Terrace, where she competed in numerous speed skating competitions which led her to be a contender for the U.S. Olympics. After graduation with the Class of 1948, Barbara chose to continue her education at SCCC with classes courtesy of a program with General Electric. She then worked for GE as an accountant and cashier in their accounting office for many years. She met Harold Olson and the two began their life together.
Barbara was very active in her community outside of work. She served as a leader in the Girl Scouts and was very active with the Schonowe Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She served as a member for over 50 years and held multiple leadership positions, including Secretary and President. She was also a woman of faith and loved her Cobblestone Reformed Church, where she was a member of the choir and served as the choir director for over a decade.
Barbara is survived by her daughters: Terri Lee Masterson, Joan Barratieri; her Son-in-Law, Martin Christiansen; her sister Diane (Jim) Allen; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband: Harold; their son, Robert Olson; their daughter: Hollie Christiansen; and her brother John (Beverly) Mooney
A period of visitation for Barbara will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024 from 5-8pm at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, New York 12306, and a funeral will be held at Barbara's beloved Cobblestone Church 118 Putnam Road, Schenectady, NY on Tuesday, June 4 at 10 am with a burial at Viewland Cemetery to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to: Cobblestone Church or the Schonowe Auxiliary.
