Arlene Rose Newkirk Hodges, 96
October 8, 1925-January 19, 2022
Arlene Hodges went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the Ellis Nursing Home in Schenectady. She was born in Mineville, N.Y. and raised in Fort Hunter N.Y by her father Issac Newkirk, mother Georgiana Leroy Newkirk and stepmother Emma Burger Newkirk. She was the last surviving member of her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She is predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Richard Hodges, who she married during WWII.
As a woman of her time, Arlene devoted much of her time and energy to her family, friends and church. She was a member of the Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Schenectady for over 70 years. Whenever someone was ill or needed help, she was there often with her help and food. She spent many hours canning vegetables from her garden, not only for her family, but for anyone who was in need.
Catering at the local temple provided Arlene with many rewarding years of service. And her organizational skills were quite useful when checking people in when they came to vote in November. But the activity that gave her the most joy was being a homemaker.
Arlene is survived by both of her sons and their wives: Richard and Marion Hodges and Paul and Linda Hodges, all from Massachusetts. In addition, she is grandmother to 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend Arlene’s funeral Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 11:00 am. at the Orthodox Presbyterian Church at the corner of Rugby Road and Glenwood Blvd in Schenectady. The cemetery of choice is closed for the winter and actual burial will take place in the Spring. For the safety of everyone, the family is requesting that we all wear masks during the service.
For those who would like to make a donation, select your favorite organization and donate on Arlene’s behalf.
