Anthony W Mastriani

Anthony W. Mastriani passed away on December 17, 2006 at St. Clares Hospital in the company of family. He was a life long resident of Schenectady and was a successful business man and a well respected professional pharmacist for almost 50 years. Anthony was born on May 25, 1915 and was one of five children and the oldest son of Giovanni and Maria Pasquarella Mastriani (John and Mary) who emigrated from Italy in 1909. Anthony was married to former Gloria Gagne and had one son John Anthony, both of whom predeceased him.Anthony graduated from Schenectady High School in 1933 and from the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1939 as a Pharmaceutical Chemist. He worked in several local drug stores and joined the Army reserves after his graduation. During World War II, Anthony served with the 134th Medical Group in Europe. He was granted a field promotion to Second Lieutenant because of the work he did as a Group Supply Sergeant and as the Group Operations Sergeant. He was subsequently promoted to First Lieutenant in February of 1945. Anthony was also awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts to provide medical supplies to injured soldiers and American Prisoners of War liberated by US forces from German Detention Camps. After the war, Anthony resumed his chosen profession and again worked as a pharmacist for several local businesses. In 1951, Anthony started the Draper Pharmacy and was joined very soon after the opening by his brothers Louis and Victor. Together, the Mastriani Brothers ran this family business for 38 years until they retired in 1989. The Draper Pharmacy was a well know establishment in Rotterdam and provided employment to hundreds of people over the years. Anthony's avocation was construction and woodworking and there are few relatives and friends who did not benefit from his craftsmanship. Anthony is survived by his brother Louis A. Mastriani and Sister-in-Law Jean P. Mastriani of Schenectady and his brother Victor E. Mastriani of Houston, Texas. Anthony was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Cecilian and Kathryn Freedman both of Schenectady. He is also survived by his nephews John P. Mastriani and his wife Debra of Slingerlands, Mark D. Mastriani and his wife Julia of Tucson, Arizona, Christopher D. Mastriani and his wife Sheria of Atlanta, Georgia and John V. Mastriani of Houston, Texas, his nieces Joanne Zingoni of Sarasota, Florida, and Christine Cobb of Houston, Texas. Anthony was also beloved by his long time companion Eleanor Zasada of Schenectady and her children, James Zasada and his family Linda, Nathan and Elizabeth, all of Schenectady, Susan Ferrara of Colonie, Paul Zasada of Idaho and Debbie Lees of Esperance. A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning December 21, 2006 at 10 am at St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Road, Schenectady, NY. There will be no calling hours by request. Inurment in St Cyril's Cemetery, Rotterdam, NY. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 85 Watervliet Avenue, Albany, NY 12206 or to a charity of choice. Arrangements are by Bond Funeral Home, Schenectady, NY
