In Loving Memory of Agnes June Rezende Harris

Age: 97

Date of Passing:Monday, May 25, 2026

Agnes June Rezende Harris passed away at Ellis Hospital, where she faced the challenges of irreversible complications. Her departure, though difficult, leaves behind a profound legacy of love, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to her family. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, to the late Roberta (Bertha) Williams Rezende and Augustine Rezende, Agnes exemplified a strong work ethic and deep family bonds from an early age, notably helping her siblings, mother, and Uncle Henry in assisting with the building of their mother’s family home.

Agnes was one of nine children and was especially close to her sisters, Nellie Merrill and Grace Joseph, who are now deceased. After marrying her beloved husband, Cyril Harris, a native of Schenectady who retired from the Navy and preceded Agnes in March of this year, she embarked on a global journey alongside him. As a devoted Navy wife, she raised her children across various shores, experiencing travel not only in the continental United States and Hawaii but also worldwide. Their children’s birthplaces reflect this diverse path: Robert and Barbara in Chaguaramas, Trinidad; Brian in Suffolk, VA; Cyril in Norfolk, VA; Donna in Yokosuka, Japan; Dwayne in Mountain View, CA; and Liza in Beeville, TX. The family created lasting memories, continentally and worldwide.

Eventually, the family settled in Schenectady, NY, to care for her father-in-law during his illness. It was in Schenectady, at Ellis Hospital, where Agnes gave birth to her youngest son, John Michael Harris, who tragically predeceased her at two weeks old.

Agnes was not only the foundation of her family but also a woman of exceptional talent and intellect. An accomplished seamstress, she handcrafted many of her own dresses upon arriving in the United States. Her culinary skills brought joy to those around her, and her talent for crocheting was well-known. Her sharp mind led her to work under a contractual arrangement with the NYS Tax and Finance Dept., where she was promoted to a supervisory position based on her dedication and demonstrated commitment. Above all, she was a nurturing presence, selflessly ensuring that her husband and children felt surrounded by love and support.

A woman of deep faith, Agnes was a dedicated parishioner of St. Columba’s Church (Father Murphy) and later St. Luke’s Church (Father Isopo) in Schenectady. Vicki Dunfee and her sister Mary Jane brought communion and prayed with both Mom and Dad, becoming cherished family friends through their devotion.

Agnes leaves behind her seven loving children and their spouses: Robert (Jackie), Barbara, Brian, Cyril (Areseli), Donna (Gary), Dwayne (Sue), and Liza (Tony). She is also survived by her dear brother, Hilary "Baga" Rezende, and his wife, Betsy, of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; her sister-in-law, Margaret Rezende, of Liverpool, England; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States, various locations in the Caribbean Islands, and throughout the UK, as well as a rich legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will carry her memory forward.

Agnes June Rezende Harris will be remembered for her remarkable life, characterized by love, resilience, and a deep commitment to family. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Rest in Peace.
